The building itself was built by the surrounding rounded river stones and chestnut tree beams from the nearby woods. The renovation of the building has brought together the elements of the working mill to its modern day functional living adaptation, the main kitchen table is a large round stone the one used to make flour by the local community more than one hundred years ago. The small but very cozy wooden bedroom on the first floor allows a view of the river flowing down stream which also creates a meditative ambience that sends you to sleep at night and carries your thoughts away whilst basking on the rocks in the sunshine by day in between fantastic dips into the river. The river also offers an array of hidden rock pools up and down stream with natural Jacuzzi’s when the water gathers speed and is channeled through the rocks. The house is modest but as owned by a professional chef with numerous restaurants around the globe, hence the quality collection of kitchen utensils.
A 135 m foot path leads you to access the mill – the outdoor area on entrance is in part paved with river stone and leads you to the water’s edge with your own small private jetty and under arch spaces where the water used to pass through the mill, providing you also with a cool and shaded area in the hot summer months. The upper terraces are equipped with outdoor seating areas and stone bbq/outdoor cooking area. Behind the mill is a flat stretch of land with fruit trees and another seating area the river bed runs alongside. On entrance to the property you will find kitchen/dinning/living area and a large open fire place, this room is characterized by the large round stone placed in the center which is used as a table. On the floor, there are glass windows which allow you to see under the mill, there is also a staircase under one of these windows giving you direct access to the river. Leading you to the upper floor is a wooden staircase which takes you to a landing where you can access the outdoor area to the back of property the bathroom or the bedroom. The joy of discovering a deeper rock pool up stream and being at one with nature. The satisfaction of spending the day building a damn to raise the level of the water in a chosen spot…Crossing a Roman bridge for a walk in the surrounding Chestnut and Oak woods to pick wild mushrooms and flowers or berries for your evening table.
The Mill is accessed by a foot–path that begins in a small mountain village. The village provides a fantastic local restaurant, pizzeria and farm shop run by the Sheppard’s wife. The walk to the Mill allows you to get a sometimes much needed sense of isolation from the rest of the world, switch off and leave the digital era behind.
